Most entries include descriptions of social life in and around Fredericksburg, Va., local politics (elections and the Whigs), his comments on various local ministers (including the Rev. James McGuire) and church sponsored activities, and his activities at the courthouse as clerk of the court in King George County, Va. Of special note are descriptions of a balloon ascent, 1844; a court case involving contesting the will of Nathaniel Hooe, especially the clauses for disinheriting a legitimate heir and colonization of freed slaves; a description of an explosion on the steamer Princeton while in Washington, D.C.; and description of the Lunatick Asylum in Staunton, Va.
